Dr. Roxie Strand
Naturopathic Medical Doctor
Dr. Strand was born and raised in Mitchell, South Dakota. After graduating from high school, she moved to Arizona to attend Arizona State University where she earned a B.S. degree in Microbiology. Shortly after graduating from ASU, she joined the Peace Corps and taught Math/Science in Cameroon, West Africa. Upon returning from the Peace Corps, she worked with the homeless in central Phoenix for two years before attending naturopathic medical school.
Dr. Strand graduated from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (sonoran.edu) in 2002, where she graduated at the top of her class and received the Daphne Blayden Outstanding Student Award for her “commitment to naturopathic medicine, academic excellence, compassion, perseverance, loving sense of humor and positive, supportive outlook”.
Dr. Strand loves to educate & inspire people about their health & wellness…both inside & outside of the US. She believes that her main goal as a physician is to be a teacher, which is what the word doctor (docere) actually means. She is fully committed to teaching people what they need to know to create health and vitality…and empowering them with the knowledge they need to THRIVE!
In her free time, Dr. Strand loves to be outdoors, play in nature, hike, bike, garden (which she is not very good at), play golf (which she is REALLY not very good at), and travel. In the past few years, Dr. Strand has traveled to Ghana, West Africa, and Mozambique, East Africa to offer humanitarian outreach to the people of those countries (see Humanitarian Outreach page for more details).
Naturopathic Medical Assistant
Melissa is our very talented Naturopathic Medical Assistant. Melissa successfully completed her medical assistant training from Lamson College (Arizona) in 2008. She started working with Dr. Strand in that same year and has become a very valuable addition to the practice.
Even though she was trained in the allopathic medical arena, she quickly embraced and continues to learn our naturopathic philosophies and practices. She loves to see the ever-evolving progress of our patients and our office.
Melissa is one of the most compassionate people you will ever meet, and she goes above and beyond her duties as a medical assistant. She has even been known to personally climb a fence to drop off an herbal tincture to a patient who was unable to come to the office to pick it up. She has a wonderful sense of humor, which you will quickly realize once you get to know her. She values every one of our patients and feels like they have become a second family to her over the years.
In her free time, Melissa enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and friends. She also loves to hike and experience all of the beauty our state has to offer…especially taking time to cool off in Flagstaff over our hot summers!
Melissa is talented on so many levels and can accomplish anything she puts her mind to. She has been one of Dr. Strand’s most valuable treasures, and she is excited to continue her journey and ongoing learning experience with our office.
Front Office Manager
Sydney is an Arizona native who enjoys cooking, drawing, traveling and spending time with her husband and pets. Over the years she has set aside time to travel and to explore her interests. She developed hobbies focused on personal growth such as journaling, working with animals, pressing flowers, and antique shopping. She spent time in various industries building her skills and discovering what she does best, from waitressing to dog grooming to student teaching, and realized what she is truly passionate about. The shared themes between all of these experiences have been: helping people, freely sharing knowledge, human connection, appreciation of nature, health and body positivity, expanding self-love, and feeling good — physically and mentally. She enthusiastically embraced the power of naturopathic medicine, which encompasses all those things that she is so passionate about.
Since joining us, Sydney has become a welcome part of the family and has shown a lot of initiative. She brings a creative perspective to tasks, and eagerly approaches each day as a new opportunity to learn. We enjoy seeing her smiling face at the office every day and cannot wait to see her grow with us.
